For a traveller visiting Ooty, Rose garden is a must-see place to visit. The very famous Rose Garden of Ooty is located at a height of 2200-2400 metres above sea level. Located in the heart of Ooty, about 1 km from the Botanical garden, this beautiful enclosure covers an area of 10 acres. The garden fosters largest collection of roses in any garden of India. One can find about 20,000 different varieties of roses. The garden has been beautifully maintained by the Horticulture department of Tamil Nadu since 1995. In the year of 2006, the garden was awarded “Garden of Excellence” by the World Federation of Rose Society. If you haven’t ever seen roses of black and green colour then you should definitely visit this garden. The other varieties that will take your breath away are Miniature Roses, Ramblers, Hybrid Tea Roses, Yakimour, Polyanthas and more.

There are over five terraces spreading on four hectares which carry rose hedges. There is a statue of an angel at the centre of the garden. Once you have enjoyed the fragrance and beauty of the rare roses at this garden, you can head towards the ‘Nila Maadam’ observation platform at the top of the garden. If you want to watch the garden at its best, then you should visit it during the special bloom period. Though the garden is open rest of the year, the roses are trimmed and without bloom. You can even purchase seeds or saplings as a souvenir for memories.

Travel tips:

Entrance time is 9:00 am to 6:30 pm. There is a very small amount entry fee. Snacks are available at kiosks outside the rose garden. Public transportation available to the place. The best season to visit the garden is May to July and November to January.
