Botanical garden is one of the most popular attractions of Ooty. Spread over a vast area of 22 hectares, this botanical garden is located in the heart of the city. It was designed in 1847. The garden is placed at an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level and is maintained by Horticulture Department of Government of Tamil Nadu. The garden houses more than 650 species of flowers and trees. The whole area is categorised into six parts i.e. the Lower Garden, New Garden, Italian Garden, Conservatory, Fountain Terrace and Nurseries. One of the must see attraction of this garden is a fossil tree that is believed to be 20 millions year old. The other attractions of the garden is arboretum, which is a living collection of tree and woody plant sprawling in 1.58 hectares since 1992 showcasing many different tree species. There are a few Toda huts on the hills just above the garden where the Todas (the original tribes of Ooty) live. The garden is the venue of the famous Summer Festival of Ooty held every year in the month of May. The best part of the festival is the Flower Show organized by the garden that brings more than 10 million tourists every year from all over the world to this garden.  The first show was organized in the year 1896 and since then, this two-day show has become a ritual to showcase cut flowers, flower arrangements, tropical and temperate vegetables as well as fruits by the contestants.
