The lake that is named after the hill station is a must see place on the bucket list for any tourist visiting Ooty. This is an artificial lake built in 1824. It spreads across an area of 65 acres.

The lake was originally intended to be used for fishing with ferries used to travel across the lake. It gradually shrunk from its original size giving place to the current bus stand race course, and the lake park. The lake was formed by damming the streams that flow down the Ooty Valley.

The lake is lined by tall Eucalyptus trees while its waters are fed by streams that meander through the hills. With the mountain railway running through one of its banks, the Ooty Lake is among the most beautiful and picturesque lakes that you will come across in South India. One can hire rowing boats, paddle boats and motor boats from the Boat House and enjoy a boat ride in the lake.

Other than boating, there is a vegetarian restaurant, 3D simulation theatre, Tora Tora, kids play area, Gift shop, floating snack bar, mini train, chat corner, dashing car ride, 3D video games, Nilgiri product shop, nursery etc. The small garden provides visitors shady place to sit and rest. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation on behalf of the Tourism Department took the possession of the lake in 1973, for providing boating facilities as a tourist attraction. In the month of May, boat races and boat pageantry events are organized for two days. The lake has been a chosen backdrop from few Bollywood songs and movie scenes. You can go horse riding near the lake. Tourists can also find a lot of shops selling local items like eucalyptus oils and shawls at competitive prices around the lake.
