Pykara is the name of a village and river located 19 kms from Ooty on the Ooty-Mysore road. The river has a dam and a power-plant. Because of the dam, the backwater forms a big lake which is called Pykara Lake. At the end of the dam, the river falls down from two different heights towards the end, one from 55 metres and the other from 61 metres. These two falls are known as Pykara falls and are located at a distance of 1.5 kms away from the lake. The attraction is set amid lush greenery and breathtaking sights which allures people from different parts of the country to visit this place. This lake has become a chosen location for many South Indian movies.

Pykara Lake is considered a blessed lake by the Toda tribe of Nilgiris. A boat house on the Pykara reservoir is an added attraction for tourists. Visitors can hire a speedboat or motorboat from the boat house and enjoy a fun ride in the lake. There is also a rest house and restaurant at the place, run by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation. The place is a popular picnic spot among locals as well as tourists.  Pykara waterfalls flow through Mukurthi, Pykara and Glen Morgan dams. Public transportation is available.  There is a nominal fee to watch waterfalls. Additional fee should be paid for boat ride. The place is open to visitors from 9: 00 am to 6:00 pm on all days of the week. Refreshments are available at the in-house restaurant.
