Bangalore – Mysore – Bandipur – Ooty

If you are a traveler, a road trip from Bangalore to the Nilgiris is a must take. You are going to experience all the serenity nature has to offer in this trip from mountains to beautiful lakes and tea blankets to spice plantations. You are also going to encounter the forest trails, lush grasslands, beautiful wildlife and entertaining tribal interactions.

The journey is going to be about 360 kilometers, calculatively for about 7 – 9 hours if you don’t take any stoppage. However, the scenic beauty is so captivating that you won’t be able to resist stopping at each location in the midway and enjoy it.

Reaching Mysore, your journey to wildlife serenity starts here. You are going to find small lakes, picturesque scenery, flora and fauna and much more leading towards Nanjangud and Gundlupet from Mysore airport. The area comprises of a beautiful hill called Himvad Gopalswamy Betta, which is surrounded by dense fog throughout the year and has a temple dedicating lord Gopalswamy at the top. Moving ahead Gundlupet makes a perfect trekking area being surrounded by a national park, allowing you to trek with various animals.

Bandipur National Park, which is a tiger reserve project, is going to give you a perfect sight of various endangered species alongside beautiful rivers, Kabini, Moyar and Nugu. You can even take a night halt here to experience the wildlife closely before moving further. Adjacent to Bandipur, is Mudumalai National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, which again is a host of various interesting wildlife species including the famous Indian Leopard, Indian White-rumped vulture and the Bengal tiger.

Further ahead Theppekadu is another stoppage for wildlife lovers. You can find bamboo fodder and an elephant camp, which is also a training and research area for detained pachyderms. The camp offers various entertainment activities especially on Saturday and Sunday evenings with the elephant dancing, soccer and race.

From Theppekadu the roads here divide into two to which lead to Ooty. One through Masinagudi and Kalhatty ghats with an adventurous trail of 36 hair pin bends through a steep route and the second through Gudalur with a much more scenic route.

At Gudalur, you are going to encounter beautiful tea plantations and grasslands. Reaching Devala, again your eyes are going to witness beautiful plantations, fog and dense pine forests. The place is known to experience third highest rainfall in the country and makes a beautiful natural dot. Pine forests here are a perfect to stop and take some lovely photographs. Moving ahead Needle Rock and Frog Hill offer a prefect view of these forests and again make a perfect photography mood.

Mukurthi National Park, a Nilgiri Tahr protection area, however, not open for casual tourism is a worth visit n special permits. The area is surrounded by beautiful Pykara lake and shola forests with a touch of Toda tribe in the area. Then comes the popular movie location – Wenlock Downs, also known as 6th and 9th mile offering beautiful chain of glass slopes and Eucalyptus forests covering far ends. You’ll be welcomed here with the famous chocolate, vanilla and masala teas of the area. The place also hosts Hindustan Films Company, highlight Ooty Gymkhana Club for golfing and a government sheep farm.

An untouched habitat, Bhavani lake and Dam make a beautiful location being surrounded by tick foliage of shola forests. You can even go for trout fishing and trekking around the Avalanche Lake, which makes a perfect trekking base for various nearby hills. Silent Valley, another picturesque location host variety of fish and birds at the Emerald Lake however, you got to acquire permissions from the District Forest Office in Ooty to visit these places.

Glenmorgan and Singara make a perfect tea estate experience around the area. You can also experience panoramic views of the Nilgiri hills and tea plantations from Lamb’s Rock and Lady Canning’s Seat.

The area certainly offers great panoramic views and a lifetime adventure trip. However keeping safety trough the endangered roads and profiling necessities must be kept in mind.
