A three-day long feast for the senses is here!

A 120 Year Old Tradition

A tradition that began in 1896 under the aegis of the Nilgiris Agri-Horticultural Society, the Ooty Flower Show continues to thrive to this day – one hundred and twenty long years after its inception! Its sustenance is owed to the spectacular show it puts up each year.

A Major Tourist Attraction

Anything between 150,000 to 300,000 tourists arrive from across the country to view this flower show that goes on air each summer at the famous and picturesque Government Botanical Gardens at Ooty. The Gardens – which have a terraced layout – lie sprawled over a massive twenty two hectares on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta peak and enjoys a largely temperate weather throughout the year. It is managed by the Tamil Nadu Horticultural Department.

A Mind-boggling Variety on Display!

The sheer variety and number of flowers on display here are mind-boggling! This year, for instance, fifteen thousand is the number of flower types that are being prepared for the show! Also, thirty five new varieties of Dahlias will go on display.

The Schedule

The first days sees the inauguration of the show, while on the subsequent days, prizes are distributed to winners of various competitions held in connection with the show. Approximately two hundred and fifty competitors take part in the show each year and present their exhibits therein. Various agencies of the government and voluntary agencies too are among those who take part in the show each year. Around sixty rolling cups, two hundred and fifty cups and cash prizes are awarded to the best exhibitors.

The Various Exhibits

In years past, sand sculptures, countless varieties of potted plants, cut flowers and a number of types of temperate and tropical fruits and vegetables have gone on display. Floral decorations in a number of shapes and sizes are another key attraction of the gardens and, in particular, the flower show. Japanese and Indian flower arrangements, flower rangolis, bonsai (miniature trees), vegetable carving etc are the other attractive aspects of the show. Exclusive cut flowers from large private and public gardens are also to be found here during the days of the show.

The Garden Competition

In connection with the flower show, a garden competition is also held wherein public gardens, estate gardens, private cottage gardens and various other categories of gardens compete. This is held to both encourage flower growers and also to increase awareness among them. On average, around two hundred gardens take part in the event each year. The competition, though, is not held during the days of the Annual Flower Show but before it.

Soak Up the Gardens Too While There!

While on location at the Government Botanical Gardens, it is also a great time to take a look around and enjoy all that the gardens have to offer, ranging from the sprawling lawns with flowering plants, ponds filled with lilies, Italian-styled flower beds and even a variety of medicinal plants that you might like to study.
